How to Get from Liberia Airport (LIR) to Tamarindo

If you're headed to the Guanacaste beaches, flying into Liberia's Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) is a smart move — you're much closer to the coast than from San José. Tamarindo, the region's most popular beach town, is only about 1 hour 20 minutes (70 km / 44 mi) away. Here's how to make the trip.

1. Private shuttle (recommended)

A private shuttle is the most comfortable way to reach Tamarindo. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you directly to your hotel or villa, with space for luggage, surfboards and child seats. Because the price is per vehicle, it's often cheaper than a taxi and far more comfortable than a shared van. With Travesía it starts at $135 for up to 5 passengers. Check current prices on our Liberia to Tamarindo shuttle page.

Tip: Staying at a beach nearby — Flamingo, Conchal, Brasilito or Playas del Coco? A private shuttle drops you at any of them for a similar price.

2. Shared shuttle

Shared shuttles cost less per person but run on set schedules and stop at several hotels along the way, adding time. They're a good budget choice for solo travellers who don't mind a little extra waiting.

3. Rental car

A rental car is handy if you want to explore multiple Guanacaste beaches or drive to national parks like Rincón de la Vieja. Roads to Tamarindo are paved and easy. Factor in mandatory insurance and that some beach access roads can be rough in the green season.

4. Airport taxi

Official red taxis and airport transfer taxis are available on arrival. They're convenient but usually priced per vehicle at a higher rate than a pre-booked private shuttle, and cars are smaller — tight for groups with luggage.

Bottom line

For a fast, comfortable arrival to Tamarindo — especially with family, friends or beach gear — book a private shuttle in advance. You'll skip the taxi line and head straight to the sand.
