La Fortuna, at the foot of the Arenal Volcano, is one of Costa Rica's most popular destinations — and most travellers arrive through San José's Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). The drive is about 3 hours (120 km / 75 mi) northwest through rolling farmland and mountain roads. Here are your options, from most to least comfortable.
| Option | Time | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private shuttle | ~3h | From $220 / vehicle | Comfort, families, groups, door-to-door |
| Shared shuttle | ~4h | ~$55–65 / person | Solo travellers on a budget |
| Rental car | ~3h | Varies + gas & tolls | Independent exploring |
| Public bus | ~4.5–5h | ~$5–8 / person | Lowest budget, plenty of time |
A private shuttle picks you up right at the airport (or your San José hotel) and takes you straight to your La Fortuna hotel's door — no stops for other passengers, no transfers. You travel on your own schedule with a professional local driver, and the price is per vehicle, not per person, so it's especially good value for couples, families and groups.
With Travesía, the SJO → La Fortuna transfer takes about 3 hours and starts at $220 for up to 5 passengers (larger vans available), taxes and tolls included. We also monitor your flight, so a delay is never a problem. See live prices on our San José Airport to La Fortuna shuttle page.
Shared (or "collective") shuttles are cheaper because you ride in a van with other travellers. They run on fixed departure times and make several hotel pick-ups and drop-offs, so the trip usually takes around 4 hours. It's a solid choice for solo travellers watching their budget, but you give up flexibility and door-to-door convenience.
Renting a car gives you freedom to explore Arenal's waterfalls, hot springs and hanging bridges at your own pace. The drive is straightforward and paved the whole way. Keep in mind mandatory local insurance, tolls, and finding (and paying for) parking at attractions. If you only need to get to your hotel and back, a shuttle is usually simpler and cheaper overall.
The cheapest option is the public bus, but it's the least convenient: you'll typically travel from San José to Ciudad Quesada (San Carlos) and transfer to a second bus to La Fortuna, with limited luggage space and a total time of around 5 hours. Great if you have plenty of time and very little budget.
If comfort and time matter — and especially if you're travelling as a couple, family or group — a private shuttle is the easiest and best-value way to reach La Fortuna. Solo budget travellers may prefer a shared shuttle or the bus, while a rental car makes sense if you plan to drive around the region for several days.
