How Many Days in La Fortuna / Arenal?

Short answer: plan on 2 to 3 nights. Here's what you can realistically fit in, and how to decide between a quick stop and a proper stay.

La Fortuna, at the foot of the Arenal Volcano, packs a lot into a small area — waterfalls, hot springs, hanging bridges, rainforest trails and wildlife. It's one of Costa Rica's must-see stops, and how long you stay depends on whether you want to tick the highlights or actually slow down and enjoy them.

2 nights — the popular choice

Two nights (a full day in the middle) is the most common and lets you hit the greatest hits without rushing too much: the La Fortuna Waterfall, a volcano-view hike, and an evening soak in the hot springs. It works well if you're linking Arenal to other stops on a one-week trip.

3 nights — the comfortable choice

Add a third night and Arenal goes from "checklist" to "relaxing." You get a slower pace, time for hanging bridges and a night walk, and room to add a bigger day trip — like the turquoise Río Celeste waterfall — without feeling like you're racing the clock.

Short on time? Our La Fortuna Full-Day Tour bundles the hanging bridges, a guided volcano hike at El Silencio, a traditional lunch and the waterfall into one day — ideal if you only have 24 hours.

When one night is enough

If your trip is tight, a single night still lets you see the waterfall and soak in the hot springs — just book a guided full day so you're not spending your limited hours figuring out logistics.

Getting to (and from) La Fortuna

Most travelers arrive from San José (SJO) — about a 3-hour drive — or from Liberia (LIR) in Guanacaste. From La Fortuna it's a scenic ride onward to Monteverde or the Pacific beaches. A private transfer means door-to-door service with a local driver and no rushing for a shuttle. See prices on the SJO → La Fortuna route or plan the whole trip with our 7-day itinerary.
